Instead of working to create a story full of heavy emotions in the trailer, Dead Island 2 adopts a nonchalant attitude that is entertaining, but doesn't make sense. Players witness a day in the life of Jacob, one of six playable characters, in a trailer that has all the charm of a B-list movie. Jacob isn't doing anything extraordinary.
I found Dead Island 1s characters to be more clearly defined in terms of their intended playstyle. Obviously you can play each Slayer however you really want, but I found it generally easier to make a decision before when I knew "this character is great with blades, this one is better with guns, that one gets bonuses to throwing".
